Anti-Cancer: Spice and Everything Nice

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) August 5, 2006

Renowned surgeon *Mehmet Oz*, MD had quite a number of appearances on The Oprah Winfrey show. In one particular episode, he presented actual healthy and damaged human organs to show what happens to the body when we continuously eat the wrong kind of food, smoke a pack of cigarettes deliriously, and drink liquor like there is no tomorrow. The results were diabolically life-altering. Hundreds of viewers testified that after watching Dr Oz briefly go from one organ to another, they shuddered in their seats and couldn’t believe that those organs could as well be theirs. You could also check out the Discovery Health Channel hit, Second Opinion, and read his bestseller, You: The Owner’s Manual. Whether he is on television or speaks through the pages of his books, he advocates a healthy and practical change in everyone. His medical methods and layman approach to disease, specifically cancer and cardiovascular ailments, have challenged people from all over the world to finally take the reins and be the boss of their own body. And the simplest way to gain control is to be mindful of what we eat and drink.

Nowadays, medical professionals are more focused on cancer prevention with the objective to fight the disease even before it starts. More and more people are diverting their attention to the importance of daily nutrition and the choices that they are making with regard to their lifestyle, such as quitting smoking and drinking alcohol in moderation. Most of these studies claim that the use of natural substances can actually help prevent the disease.

One of the most highly advertised anti-carcinogenic substances is lycopene, a member of the carotenoid family which includes beta-carotene and other compounds found naturally in food. It is commonly known as the pigment that gives tomatoes their red color. What some people don’t know is that it is also a free radical-fighting antioxidant responsible for warding off damaging matter that disrupts normal cells and cause disease. It has also been proven to boost the immune system. It is shown to be better consumed when the tomatoes are cooked and mixed with a little healthy fat. For the sake of convenience, lycopene has also been made into a dietary supplement. However, studies show that taking it other than its natural form is not as effective as eating real tomatoes because it works better together with other phytochemicals found in the vegetable but not necessarily present in the pill. The combination of these bioactive compounds may be needed to provide optimum protection from cancer. This encourages people to eat tomatoes from pasta sauces, pastes, and freshly squeezed juices.

Capsaicin, the stuff found in chilly peppers that make them hot, could be the next line of defense in modern cancer prevention. Studies show that daily consumption of hot peppers may actually fight off some kinds of cancer. In certain parts of the world, cases of intestinal, stomach, and colon cancer are considerably low compared to the United States. Experts believe that the low cancer rate in South America, for instance, may be tied to their frequent intake of japaleno peppers and hot cayenne, both of which contain capsaicin.

The latest trend in cancer prevention mentions the health benefits of flavonoids. One can find a vast array of flavonoids in a diet composed of various fruits, vegetables, and spices. Flavonoids from citrus fruits such as oranges are said to have antioxidant polyphenols that contain anti-cancer elements. A number of studies also show that red wine and green tea drinkers have a low risk of esophageal, lung, and stomach cancers. Another good source of flavonoids is dark chocolate. Medical experts say that cocoa has a much greater amount of antioxidants compared to red wine and green tea and dark chocolate contains a lot more cocoa than other kinds of chocolate. The production of chocolate sometimes disrupts 50% of the flavonoids but manufacturing companies are now learning to make chocolate to retain as much of the good stuff as possible. While dark chocolate has its health benefits, consuming more than enough (around 1 oz a day) can also be dangerous. It may be packed with flavonoids that fight cancer but it still contains a significant amount of calories. Always remember that a balanced diet and a healthy exercise regimen are still the key to good health.

Super Food of the Amazon

Apex, NC (PRWEB) September 25, 2006

Is Acai the world’s most powerful superfood?

The acai berry consists usually of a pit, and only 10 per cent of the berry is edible. It is small, round, and dark purple in color. It resembles a grape, but it is usually smaller and darker. It consists of an enormous seed and very little percentage of pulp (or skin). It is usually mixed with energy drinks, ice cream, and even energy bars. Healthy acai requires quick processing right after its harvest.

Though it is not actually considered organic, the acai can actually be said to be better than organic as it grows in the rainforests of the Amazon. The rain forest is untouched, and everything is grown naturally, and cared for by the natives. No mass farming or mass production exists.

Pronounced ah-sigh-ee, acai, or euterpe oleracea (arecaceae) boasts of numerous health rewards, which is why its reputation as a wonder product has been growing impressively. It is highly promoted by Dr. Nicholas Perricone, a health guru and best-selling author, calling the acai a “superfood.”

The acai berry was not found in North America until two years ago. It is a small, dark, purple fruit from the palmberry tree. It usually grows in the wild Amazonian jungles in Brazil, where it is harvested by natives who have been reaping its health benefits for generations now. Acai is usually served pureed, and consumed as you would a drink. You can even enjoy it as Brazilians do-as fruit shakes, where it is mostly sold along the beaches of Brazil.

Acai is an acquired taste, as the taste will remind you of red wine with a few touches of chocolate. Because of this, most juice bars in the west coast use it as an ingredient when serving smoothies and fruit juices.

Because it is rich in anthocyanins, an antioxidant that battles cholesterol and free radicals, regular intake of acai will help prevent blood clots, improve blood circulation, and relax blood vessels. It is also a great help in preventing arthresclerosis and a powerful combatant of cancer. Red wine has been said to be healthy, and this is because of the anthocyanin content found in grapes. Acai actually has 33 times more anthocyanin than the grape. Anthocyanins also help treat diabetes retinopathy.

Aside from anthocyanins, the acai also includes oleic acid, an acid that is very good for the heart. Oleic acid also keeps a cancer-causing oncogene, usually found in breast cancer patients, from acting up. Acai is also rich in iron and is a great help for people who suffer from digestive malfunctions.

What makes acai so good is that it is also low in calories and fat, yet high in fiber. Its benefits can usually be found in its skin, which includes nutrients such as phytosterols, vitamin C, vitamin E, manganese, chromium, copper, and even boron. Acai also boasts of more calcium content than milk.

Studies show that aside from the benefits mentioned, taking acai helps protect you from viruses and prostate concerns. It also helps improve lipoprotein metabolism and reinforces your immune system. Another positive factor of acai is that it is also considered a potent aphrodisiac, because of its revitalizing qualities. To come up with your energizing aphrodisiac, simply mix your acai pulp with Brazilian guarana. The mix acts like a caffeinated drink. You can also mix it with a number of other mixtures, as nothing in the acai’s composition has been considered dangerous when mixed with other drinks. You can mix it in with citrus juice, milk, or even beer.

US users may be disappointed to know that acai is not usually found in US stores. This is because the acai fruit spoils easily. However, most health stores usually offer acai juice or frozen pulp, which you can purchase. Brazilian athletes, on the other hand, consider acai as an important staple in their diets.

While you can definitely get the nutrients found in acai from other nutrients, what gives acai the advantage over other sources is that it packs all these beneficial ingredients in just one tiny product. You don’t have to get all the other fruits and supplements to get your fill of healthy nutrients; you just get your hands on some acai juice and your healthy lifestyle is underway.

Other benefits of this amazing product include giving you greater energy and stamina. Aside from improving your digestion, it also helps you focus more mentally in your work. Taking acai juice or acai smoothie will also help you sleep better at night. Acai also includes more proteins than that egg you have for breakfast. It also serves as a revitalizing product, giving you the energy equivalent to that of a raging bull, which helps increase your sexual drive and performance.

It also includes a roster of the nutrients that you need: phosphorus, calcium, iron, potassium, plus the vitamins thiamin (vitamin B1), riboflavin (vitamin B2), niacin (vitamin B3), ascorbic acid (vitamin C) and tocopherol (vitamin E). It also has monounsaturated linoleic acid, known as Omega 6, to help lower your harmful cholesterol (or LDL) while still maintaining good cholesterol (HDL) in your system. Its 12% linoleic acid (Omega 9) content is polyunsaturated, which also helps maintain cholesterol levels. It contains amino acid complex and trace minerals that will help improve muscle contraction and regeneration. It contains low sugar levels and also helps you detoxify.

Aside from all these, acai contains valuable phytosterols. These sterols provide several beneficial qualities, such as helping reduce your blood plasma cholesterol. These sterols are also being used to help treat symptoms associated with BP.

What else are you waiting for? Get your hands on one of those luscious acai juices or acai smoothies and be on the fast track to the healthy life.

No Fat Mummies – 7 Tips Help You Avoid Halloween Induced, Holiday Weight Gain

Ponte Vedra Beach, FL (PRWEB) October 11, 2006

For many people, the holiday weight gain season starts before Halloween, not Thanksgiving. The money spent on candy and costumes puts Halloween in the position of the number two retail holiday in the U.S. On the downside, the calories contained in this massive amount of candy, turn into body fat for a large part of the US population.

“Obesity is on the rise in most parts of the U.S. Halloween is one of the reasons. Stores start offering mountains of Halloween candy in September. Naturally, women buy their candy early. If Halloween is three weeks away, some, if not all of that candy is going to be eaten, simply because it’s in the house.” claims Exercise Physiologist and fitness consumer advocate Joey Atlas.

“To make things worse, people will buy the things they like. They’ll buy extra ‘just in case’ they get a lot of trick or treaters and they’ll keep the leftovers to snack on during the week after Halloween.”

Nutrition habits have a direct impact on body fat and fitness levels. Consumers should use this piece of information to prevent the typical, unwanted holiday weight gain which starts before Halloween and doesn’t end until after New Years Day.

Joey Atlas offers the following Halloween advice to people who want to stay in control of their weight this holiday season:

1) Don’t buy your candy in early or mid October. Wait until the week before Halloween.

2) Don’t buy too much candy.

3) Pre plan what you are going to do with the leftovers.

4) If you can’t give away the leftovers just throw them away.

5) Don’t buy Halloween candy that you like.

6) Buy healthier treats such as 100% dried fruit snacks or dark chocolate.

7) Stay on or start an exercise program. Don’t wait for the New Year.

Food and Beverage Technologist Reviews Trends

Trenton, NJ (PRWEB) January 16, 2007

One thing we know for sure is that Americans are becoming more health conscious. One of the big trends in 2007 for the food industry is creating foods and beverages that provide health benefits to the consumer and meet market demands.

Foodconsultant.biz, a food and beverage product development website, reviews some of the biggest trends in the industry. The website, owned and operated by food technologist and expert industry consultant Pete Maletto of PTM Food Consulting talks about unknown carcinogens found in fried foods and how to reduce them, as well as infusing antioxidants in functional foods and beverages to provide consumer health benefits.

Current food and beverage trends are low glycemic and sugar free, as it seems the public is becoming carb conscious once again. While low glycemic was relatively unheard of just a few years ago, these foods and beverages are establishing themselves as a viable niche in the mainstream U.S. market, with expected 2007 year-end sales reaching $ 350 million, according to Low Glycemic Index Food and Beverages in the U.S., the latest market research from Packaged Facts.

“The world seems to be reducing carbohydrates once again and it’s resurfacing as sugar free and low glycemic trends. But it also seems like low carbohydrate foods overall are making a comeback (eggs and meats) as the obesity and diabetes numbers continue to rise. If food manufacturers would just eliminate the high fructose corn syrup and use healthier alternatives it would really help a reduction in these diseases. As a food technologist, I have utilized the alternatives in new product development with some responsible manufacturers I work for. They have seen their profits increase dramatically by making their foods healthier and replying to consumer demand,” said Pete Maletto.

Functional foods and beverages are also seeing an increase in sales across the board and identifying itself as a new trend. Functional foods are foods that have specific micronutrient (vitamins and minerals) or macronutrient (protein, fat and carbohydrate) content that is designed to extend the health benefit beyond basic nutrition of the product.

Examples can include functional foods infused with antioxidants, omega fatty acids, fiber and/or protein enriched whole grain foods, and nutrient fortified beverages. Biologically active components of the nutrients and antioxidants used in functional foods usually impart health benefits or desirable physiological effects. New functional food ingredients are being discovered every day and consumer demand for “food with a healthy function” is another growing trend.

“Highly rated, antioxidant infused, functional foods and beverages can absolutely extend life and the public is becoming more aware of these foods everyday. These include antioxidants from berries and fruits, green foods and dark chocolate. All these super foods have phytochemicals such as polyphenols, and flavonoids. Clinical studies have shown that consuming these phytochemicals in foods and beverages is associated with the benefits of creating optimal cardiovascular health, the prevention of cancers and mutations, and also helps decrease the aging process,” said Maletto.

Twenty years ago, you would have been hard-pressed to find any scientific papers highlighting the importance of our certain foods in our diet in relation to our health. Today, the medical journals are filled with such references and it appears that consumers are finally recognizing that the foods we eat play a key role in the optimal health and disease prevention.

AntiOXinabox(TM) Announces Launch: Introducing the World’s First “Everything” Antioxidant Company
